To embark on a quad biking or buggy tour in Svalbard is to enter one of the world’s last true wildernesses, where the Arctic’s raw beauty unfolds in every direction. Located far north of mainland Norway, Svalbard is an archipelago defined by dramatic contrasts: endless summer daylight, deep polar nights, and a landscape sculpted by glaciers, fjords, and rugged mountains. The area around Longyearbyen, the archipelago’s main settlement, offers a unique blend of remoteness and accessibility, making it an exceptional destination for those seeking adventure on four wheels. Here, the silence of the tundra is punctuated only by the hum of your engine and the distant calls of seabirds, while the crisp, clean air carries the scent of ice and earth. The interplay of light on the snowfields and rocky outcrops creates a constantly shifting panorama, immersing riders in the Arctic’s ever-changing atmosphere.

Riding a quad bike or buggy across Svalbard’s varied terrain is a sensory journey through the heart of the High North. Typical routes wind along gravel tracks and permafrost plains, skirting the icy banks of the Adventfjorden and climbing towards the foothills of the Nordenskiöld mountains. Tours often last between two and four hours, with some longer expeditions venturing deeper into the wild, where reindeer graze and Arctic foxes dart across the tundra. The sensation of steering a powerful vehicle over loose stones and packed snow is both exhilarating and grounding, as the landscape shifts from open valleys to narrow riverbeds and windswept ridges. The contrasts are striking: moments of high-speed excitement give way to quiet pauses, where the only sounds are the wind and the distant crackle of melting ice. Along the way, riders may encounter remnants of Svalbard’s mining history or pause to take in sweeping views towards Isfjorden and the distant peaks beyond.

Local guides in Svalbard are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s challenging conditions and unique wildlife. The outdoor culture here is defined by self-reliance, camaraderie, and a deep appreciation for nature’s extremes, all of which are reflected in the careful planning and attentive support offered throughout each excursion.

Quad biking and buggy tours in Svalbard are available from late spring through early autumn, when the midnight sun bathes the landscape in golden light and the ground is free of deep snow. While no prior experience is required, participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable handling a vehicle over uneven surfaces. These adventures are accessible to beginners and seasoned riders alike, with guides adapting routes and pacing to suit different skill levels. Families, groups of friends, and solo travellers all find a place here, united by a shared curiosity for the Arctic and a desire to experience its wild spaces up close.

We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
