Set deep within the Arctic Circle, Svalbard is a place where the raw beauty of the north unfolds in every direction. Boat tours in Svalbard offer a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a world sculpted by ice, wind, and sea. From the main settlement of Longyearbyen, the coastline stretches into a labyrinth of fjords, towering glaciers, and rugged islands, where the interplay of light and shadow changes with the hour. The silence is profound, broken only by the distant crack of calving ice or the calls of seabirds circling above. Here, the polar wilderness is not just a backdrop but a living, breathing presence, inviting you to discover its secrets from the unique vantage point of the water.

Embarking on a boat tour in Svalbard is an experience defined by contrasts and surprises. Typical excursions depart from Longyearbyen or Barentsburg, tracing the Isfjorden or venturing toward the Nordenskiöld Glacier. Depending on the route, you may glide past blue-tinged icebergs, navigate narrow inlets, or skirt the edge of remote islands where walruses haul out on pebbled beaches. The Arctic air is crisp, carrying the scent of salt and glacier melt, while the water reflects the ever-changing sky—sometimes a deep cobalt, sometimes a shimmering silver under the midnight sun. Tours range from a few hours to full-day expeditions, with moments of quiet contemplation punctuated by the thrill of spotting a polar bear or a pod of belugas. The terrain is both serene and dramatic, with sheer cliffs, ice floes, and the constant presence of the wild.

Safety and expertise are at the heart of every boat tour in Svalbard. Local guides are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s unpredictable conditions and wildlife. They provide all necessary equipment, including thermal suits, life jackets, and waterproof gear, ensuring comfort and security even in brisk Arctic temperatures. Briefings cover safety protocols, wildlife etiquette, and the unique challenges of navigating polar waters. The outdoor culture here is one of respect and preparedness, shaped by generations of explorers and scientists who have called Svalbard home. Logistics are seamless, with transport, gear, and guidance included, allowing you to focus fully on the experience.

The ideal season for boat tours in Svalbard runs from late spring to early autumn, when the sea ice recedes and the archipelago becomes accessible by water. The midnight sun bathes the landscape in ethereal light from May to August, while September brings a golden twilight and fewer visitors. Most tours are suitable for beginners, though a basic level of fitness is recommended due to the cold and the need to move safely on board. Families, solo travellers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts all find something to inspire them here, whether it’s the thrill of Arctic exploration or the quiet majesty of untouched nature.

Discovering Svalbard by boat is an invitation to witness the Arctic’s grandeur up close, guided by those who know its rhythms best. Let Manawa connect you with trusted local professionals and unforgettable journeys across these northern waters, where every moment brings a new perspective on one of the world’s last true wildernesses.

We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
