Svalbard, a remote archipelago deep within the Arctic Circle, offers an unrivalled setting for snowmobiling. Here, the landscape is sculpted by glaciers, fjords and endless snowfields, stretching from the colourful settlement of Longyearbyen to the wild reaches of Isfjorden and Adventdalen. The low polar sun casts a silvery glow across the tundra, while the crisp air carries the faint scent of sea ice and distant mountains. Snowmobiling in Svalbard is not just a sport; it is an immersion into a world where silence and vastness reign, and where every journey reveals the raw, untouched beauty of the High Arctic.

Riding a snowmobile across Svalbard’s frozen terrain is a dynamic and sensory experience. The engine’s hum breaks the stillness as you glide over powdery snow, weaving between icy valleys and frozen rivers. Typical routes might lead you from Longyearbyen towards the dramatic Tempelfjorden, past the blue-tinged glaciers of Nordenskiöld Land, or along the coast where reindeer and Arctic foxes occasionally appear against the white expanse. Excursions can range from a few hours to full-day adventures, with the terrain shifting from smooth, wind-packed plains to rugged, undulating moraines. The contrasts are striking: moments of exhilarating speed give way to pauses in absolute quiet, where only the distant crackle of ice or the call of a seabird interrupts the silence. The cold is invigorating, the light ever-changing, and the sense of space is profound.

Local guides in Svalbard are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s challenging conditions and unique wildlife. They provide all essential equipment, including insulated suits, helmets, boots and gloves, ensuring both comfort and safety in sub-zero temperatures. Briefings cover snowmobile operation, Arctic navigation and environmental awareness, reflecting the strong outdoor culture and respect for nature that defines life in Svalbard. Safety is paramount: guides monitor weather and ice conditions closely, carry emergency gear, and adapt routes as needed. The logistics are seamless, with transport from Longyearbyen and clear instructions making the adventure accessible even for those new to snowmobiling, provided they are in good physical health.

The prime season for snowmobiling in Svalbard runs from February to May, when the snow is deep and the daylight gradually returns after the polar night. This period offers optimal conditions for both beginners and experienced riders, though a reasonable level of fitness is important due to the cold and the physical demands of steering a snowmobile over varied terrain. The activity welcomes solo travellers, couples, families with older children and groups seeking a shared Arctic adventure. Whether you are looking for your first taste of snowmobiling or aiming to explore further into Svalbard’s wilderness, there are routes and experiences tailored to different interests and abilities.

Discovering snowmobiling in Svalbard is an invitation to connect with the Arctic’s elemental forces, guided by local expertise and surrounded by landscapes that stir the imagination. We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
