To chase the Northern Lights in Svalbard is to step into one of the world’s last true frontiers, where Arctic wilderness meets celestial spectacle. Located far above the Arctic Circle, Svalbard is an archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole, renowned for its untouched landscapes and polar night. Here, the aurora borealis is not just a fleeting phenomenon but a regular visitor, painting the sky with shifting ribbons of green, violet and pink. The crisp, dry air and minimal light pollution around Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s main settlement, create ideal conditions for witnessing this natural wonder. The silence of the tundra, broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot or the distant call of a Svalbard reindeer, sets the stage for an experience that feels both intimate and immense.

Embarking on a Northern Lights chase in Svalbard is an immersive journey through a landscape shaped by ice, wind and time. Guided excursions often begin in Longyearbyen and venture into the surrounding valleys, such as Adventdalen or the coastal plains near Isfjorden. Travellers may travel by snowmobile, dog sled or even on foot, depending on the season and weather. The terrain varies from frozen fjords to gentle slopes and wide, open plateaus, each offering a unique vantage point for aurora viewing. The Arctic night envelops you, heightening every sense: the cold air tingles on your skin, the snow reflects the faintest glimmer of starlight, and the silence is profound. The anticipation builds as you scan the horizon, and when the aurora appears, the sky erupts in colour and movement, a silent dance that feels both otherworldly and deeply personal. The experience alternates between moments of quiet reflection and bursts of excitement as the lights intensify and fade.

Local guides in Svalbard are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s challenging conditions and unpredictable weather. They provide essential equipment such as insulated suits, boots, helmets and headlamps, ensuring comfort and safety in sub-zero temperatures. Each excursion is carefully planned, with guides monitoring aurora forecasts and adapting routes to maximise the chance of a successful sighting. Safety is paramount, with strict protocols in place for travel in polar bear territory and rapidly changing weather. The outdoor culture in Svalbard is rooted in respect for nature and self-reliance, and guides share not only technical expertise but also stories of life in the High Arctic, enriching the experience with local insight and warmth.

The best time for a Northern Lights adventure in Svalbard is from late October to mid-February, when the polar night cloaks the archipelago in darkness for weeks on end. While no prior experience is necessary, participants should be prepared for cold conditions and moderate physical activity, especially if travelling by snowmobile or dog sled. The activity is accessible to beginners with good fitness, as well as seasoned adventurers seeking a new perspective on the aurora. Families, couples and solo travellers alike will find the experience rewarding, with options tailored to different interests and comfort levels.

To witness the Northern Lights in Svalbard is to connect with the raw beauty and elemental power of the Arctic. With expert guidance and the promise of unforgettable moments beneath the aurora, this destination invites you to discover a world where nature’s most extraordinary light show unfolds above a landscape of ice and silence. We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
