The Spanish region of Biscay, located north of the country is one of Spain’s most attractive areas for adventurers from all over, particularly popular among people wanting a break from the capital’s region Bilbao.
Biscay has an amazing location that allows adrenaline hunters to benefit from all year long. Being next to the Pyrenees and the Bay of Biscay, the region has one of the most extensive shorelines of the north of Spain. San Sebastian in the frontier with France, for example, was created to imitate the world famous surf spot of Biarritz and, like the French resort, in San Sebastian you can find great breaks particularly in Zurriola Beach which hosts national and international championships.
Moving towards the west, you’ll find the Urdaibai National Reserve, protected by UNESCO since 1984, surrounding the towns of Bermeo and Gernika. The Urdaibai estuary is one of the reservoirs of the Basque Country’s natural wealth. There, you can wander among lush green forest during hiking trips or experience the thrill of riding downhill on a mountain bike.
The coastal town of Mundaka has two of the most popular surf beaches in all the Basque Country, the beaches of Laida and Laga attract surfers from all the corners of the world who come to challenge the tide and ride the famous lefties.
The town of Getxo is one of the most famous sports ports in Spain with a long tradition in sailing. Around this beach side port, you can find Sopelana, a popular spot in northern Biscay for paragliding. The powerful winds coming from the Bay of Biscay clashing with the mountains create amazing conditions for you to take to the skies.
In the southern part of Biscay, you will find the Urkiola Natural Park that is full of mountains for you to challenge. The Aitz-Txiki and the Alluitz peaks have imposing walls with over 400 climbing routes to choose from.
Finally, thanks to the fact that the Bilbao River flows through the capital of the same name, you can often find kayaking excursions parting from the region’s capital.
