Embarking on a quad biking or buggy tour in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is an immersive journey through a mosaic of terrains. Routes typically wind from the coastal plains, where the air is warm and tinged with sea spray, up into the foothills of the Cirque de Mafate or along the edges of the Étang de Saint-Paul nature reserve. Riders traverse red earth tracks, rocky paths, and shaded trails beneath acacia and tamarind trees, each turn revealing new textures under the tyres and shifting panoramas of blue ocean and green hills. The sensation of the engine’s vibration, the rush of wind, and the occasional splash of cool mud combine to create a dynamic, sensory-rich experience. Tours can range from short introductory circuits of one to two hours to half-day adventures, balancing moments of high-speed exhilaration with quieter pauses to absorb the views or listen to the calls of endemic birds. Great kayak-trip with a very knowledgeable guide, who spoke English besides French (which is VERY hard to find on Reunion).
The trip was very good, shame the whales have decided to vacation elsewhere this year. At least we were able to snorkel with a pod of spinner dolphins. Geoff did a good job of explaining in french and English (for myself). Overall a good trip
