Cradled between the wild Indian Ocean and the lush volcanic slopes of Réunion, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the island’s beating heart for boat tours and marine adventures. This lively seaside town, just north of Saint-Leu and within easy reach of the Cirque de Mafate and Piton de la Fournaise, offers a gateway to some of the most captivating seascapes in the Mascarenes. Here, the coastline alternates between golden beaches and rugged basalt cliffs, while the air carries the scent of salt and frangipani. Setting out from the marina, you are greeted by the play of sunlight on crystalline waters, the distant sound of waves breaking on coral reefs, and the promise of encounters with dolphins, sea turtles, and, in season, migrating humpback whales.

Embarking on a boat tour in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is an immersive journey through colour, sound, and movement. Typical excursions trace the west coast, skirting the protected lagoon and venturing beyond the reef into deeper blue. Depending on the route, you might glide past the dramatic Pointe des Aigrettes, pause to snorkel in sheltered coves, or cruise towards Boucan Canot for panoramic views of the coastline. The sensation shifts from the gentle sway of the boat in calm waters to the exhilarating spray as you pick up speed offshore. Tours range from serene morning outings, where the ocean is glassy and the light is soft, to late afternoon trips bathed in golden hues. The contrast between tranquil lagoon and open ocean creates a dynamic experience, with moments of peaceful observation punctuated by bursts of excitement when marine life appears.

Great kayak-trip with a very knowledgeable guide, who spoke English besides French (which is VERY hard to find on Reunion).
The trip was very good, shame the whales have decided to vacation elsewhere this year. At least we were able to snorkel with a pod of spinner dolphins. Geoff did a good job of explaining in french and English (for myself). Overall a good trip
