Located in the Arctic, above the polar circle, Alta is one of the main towns in Finnmark county. Yet venture just a short distance from the town centre and you'll find yourself face to face with wild nature and a profound silence. The surroundings of Alta offer a truly unique setting for nature lovers: vast unspoilt expanses, mountains, a river, and of course the Altafjord. Between October and January, whales — orcas, humpback whales, and occasionally fin whales and sperm whales — follow the herring shoals that enter the fjord, making sightings a very real possibility!
Join the Finnmark Moods team during this period and step aboard their comfortable vessel, the "Sea Runner". Designed to accommodate up to 48 passengers, the boat offers both a covered area where you can warm up whilst continuing to enjoy the scenery, and open decks for a full immersion in the Altafjord environment and the best possible views of its rich marine life. Once settled in, you'll leave the port and set off in search of whales from Alta.
Over 3 to 4 hours, you'll navigate through the fjord, taking in the beauty of its snow-capped mountains and the breathtaking reflections of light on the water, all while keeping a keen eye out for orcas or humpback whales should conditions be favourable. Whatever the sightings, this boat excursion in the Altafjord will allow you to admire stunning landscapes and learn a wealth of fascinating facts about the region's marine life, exceptional nature, and history through your guide's commentary.
Accessible to all ages, this whale watching boat excursion from Alta is a must-do activity in Finnmark county. Simply remember to bring warm, waterproof clothing to make the most of time spent on the open deck, and you'll be all set for an unforgettable experience in Norway!
