Ajaccio, the sunlit capital of southern Corsica, is a gateway to some of the Mediterranean’s most captivating underwater worlds. Nestled between the rugged peaks of the Corsican mountains and the turquoise sweep of the Gulf of Ajaccio, this vibrant coastal city offers a unique blend of natural beauty, maritime heritage, and island culture. Scuba diving here is more than an activity—it is an immersion into a landscape shaped by centuries of wind, salt, and light. The coastline is dotted with secluded coves, rocky promontories, and islets such as the Îles Sanguinaires, whose crimson glow at sunset hints at the mysteries below. Whether you are drawn by the promise of crystal-clear waters, the allure of marine biodiversity, or the gentle rhythm of Mediterranean life, Ajaccio stands out as a premier destination for scuba diving in Corsica.

Descending beneath the surface, divers are greeted by a world where sunlight dances through the water, illuminating forests of seaweed and intricate rock formations. The underwater terrain around Ajaccio is varied and dramatic, featuring sheer drop-offs, submerged arches, and sandy plateaus teeming with life. Typical dive sites range from shallow bays ideal for beginners to deeper reefs and wrecks that challenge experienced divers. Encounters with groupers, barracuda, and colourful nudibranchs are common, while the occasional glimpse of a moray eel or octopus adds a thrill of discovery. The sensation of weightlessness, the muffled soundscape, and the play of light on ancient granite create an experience that is both tranquil and exhilarating. Each dive reveals new contrasts—moments of serene stillness punctuated by the sudden movement of a shoal, or the quiet exploration of a sunken relic followed by the vibrant bustle of a reef.

Local guides and instructors in Ajaccio are passionate ambassadors of Corsica’s underwater heritage. Safety briefings are thorough, and small group sizes allow for personalised attention. Dive centres are conveniently located along the coast, with easy access to both the city and the wild beauty of the surrounding bays.

The scuba diving season in Ajaccio typically extends from late spring through early autumn, when the water is at its clearest and warmest, ranging from 18°C to 26°C. While many sites are accessible to beginners, a reasonable level of fitness is important, as even gentle currents and longer swims can be physically demanding. Advanced divers will find plenty of opportunities to explore deeper sites and wrecks, while families, couples, and solo travellers alike can enjoy introductory dives or guided snorkelling excursions. We were with 4, after the flight of 2 we had to stop due to bad wheather conditions. But we could return the next day and got to fly again, all 4 of us! They really tried to give us the best time.

The trip was well organised. The meeting place was easy to find and we were looked after well. The boat was great and sped us to the Islands.Great to walk around and see the view from the lighthouse. Plenty of wine and some lovely corsican charcuterie and cheese. The sunset view was amazing. Just loved the whole trip.

We had a lot of fun, saw octopus, sea star, sea cucumber and all kinds of colorful fish. We were with two and one of us got sea sick the second half, but despite that it was still fun.
