Must-do activities in Svalbard

Svalbard’s wild landscapes invite you to experience adventure in its purest form. For those seeking excitement, snowmobile safaris are a signature activity—journey across frozen valleys to the East Coast, Mohnbukten, or Tempelfjorden, where you may encounter the legendary polar bear, known as the ‘King of the Arctic’. Explore the surreal beauty of ice caves on guided snowmobile excursions from Longyearbyen, or embark on twilight and blue light tours to witness the Arctic’s changing light.

Boat tours are another highlight, offering access to remote wonders. Cruise to Ny-Ålesund, the world’s northernmost settlement, or join a RIB safari to Borebukta Bay and the Nordenskiöld Glacier for unforgettable wildlife encounters. Speed boat trips and nature safaris bring you close to walrus colonies, seabird cliffs, and calving glaciers. For a different perspective, sea kayaking along glacier fronts lets you glide silently through icy waters, surrounded by towering ice walls.

Adventurers can also enjoy quad biking in the Advent Valley, with options to visit husky kennels or experience the Polar Night. Wildlife photo safaris and Northern Lights chases provide opportunities to capture Svalbard’s most iconic moments, while summer snowmobiling and hiking excursions reveal the archipelago’s rugged beauty under the midnight sun. Each activity is led by expert guides, ensuring a safe and enriching exploration of this Arctic wonderland.

When to visit Svalbard?

Svalbard’s seasons offer distinct experiences, making it a year-round destination for outdoor activities. From late October to mid-February, the Polar Night transforms the archipelago into a realm of darkness illuminated by the aurora borealis—ideal for Northern Lights safaris and snowmobile tours under the stars. As daylight returns in spring, the landscape is bathed in ethereal blue light, perfect for snowmobiling and wildlife spotting.

Between May and August, the Midnight Sun reigns, providing 24-hour daylight and opening up opportunities for boat tours, kayaking, and hiking. This period is ideal for exploring glaciers, fjords, and remote settlements by sea or land. Each season brings its own magic, so your choice depends on whether you wish to experience the mystical Polar Night, the vibrant spring thaw, or the endless days of summer adventure.

Practical Information in Svalbard

Reaching Svalbard is straightforward, with regular flights connecting Longyearbyen—the main settlement—to mainland Norway. The climate is Arctic, with temperatures ranging from -20°C in winter to around 7°C in summer, so dressing in layers and using thermal gear is essential. All outdoor activities are conducted with certified local guides, who provide necessary equipment and ensure your safety in the challenging environment.

Wildlife encounters, including polar bears, are possible throughout the year; guides are trained to manage these situations and carry safety equipment. Due to the remote setting and unpredictable weather, it is important to follow your guide’s instructions and remain within designated areas. Most activities depart from Longyearbyen, where you will also find accommodation, restaurants, and visitor services to support your adventure.

We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!
